Trekking through eBay these last months, I’ve stumbled upon some glorious works of art ranging from $2 to over $500. Recently, I’ve heard there has been a certain backlash on framing art. In few cases I tend to agree, mostly if the piece is contemporary or modern, the outer sides of the canvas are painted, and the piece has staples on the back (not on the sides). Howev
er, even the most modern pieces of art may benefit from a frame (though usually in these cases a “floater” frame is always best). Below are some tips on picking out the perfect frame for your artwork.
1- First and foremost the frame, should compliment the style and color palette of the piece.
2- Then the frame should compliment the rest of the decor in the room. I say this because, diversity of artworks (and therefor frames) makes a room

interesting and prevents it from being viewed as “flat,” lifeless, and museum-like.
3- Make sure the frame is thicker than the depth of the canvas.
4- If the piece is fairly easy to find a frame for, save some money and go with a machine-cut frame.
5-If after search for the machine-cut frame, the perfect frame has still yet to reveal itself, go custom. However, by going custom be prepared to spend about $1000 more. For custom pieces, my go-to place is Frameworks in Georgetown. If you can’t find a frame there, you probably won’t be able to find it anywhere.
