The Rise of the Crossbody Bag

If you haven’t heard, we are living in a time where the crossbody handbag is king.   I purchased my first crossbody every-day bag in Summer of 2013.  It’s the Pauric Sweeney Overnight Python Bag.  I purchased it at a Second Time Around (consignment shop) in Soho and took it everywhere with me that summer in it’s boho chic glory.  It’s a tan color so I couldn’t get away with carrying it during DC winters so I put it away and brought it out again the following Spring.  Then began another 4-5 months of wearing the bag to death.  The anticipation of finding a cross-body for Fall/Winter

was getting to me though.  Luckily, I found the perfect one at a Second Time Around in Boston-a beautiful plum Nancy Gonzalez Croc Crossbody.   I love both of these bags because I have the choice to wear them as a satchel or a crossbody.

The crossbody trend is definitely here to stay, and in a city like DC, it makes total sense for it too.  Over bulky winter attire, it’s such a relief to carry a bag you can totally be hands-free with.  It also messes with your posture less than a tote, hobo, or shoulder bag you tend to carry on the same side.  In searching for a crossbody bag, make sure the bag is not heavy in itself (this is why I like croc bags so much).  You also want to shoot for an optimal size.  I like the bag to be generally around a foot in with, any smaller and you’re just not going to get a lot of wear out of it (any bigger and the bag overtake you).   The Fendi Toujour (and mini) and Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Crossbody are some of my favorites.
