For many of us that live in DC apartments and condos with less and ideal closet space, it’s time to make that gradual shift of putting away the summer clothes and bringing out the Fall clothing. Usually this task begins in September, but since we’ve been having quite the Indian summer, many have been able to put this off. But not for long! With lows in the 50s, this week is the perfect time to start incorporating your Fall wardrobe in to your closet. This also means unpacking your hosiery because it’s time to start wearing your tights and pantyhose. I personally like to wear sheer black with my skirts and dresses until it’s too cold for comfort. Then I gravitate to more heavyweight hosiery.
When transitioning from Summer to Fall, I never like to make a clean break. Definitely pack up your linen pieces but hang on to those cardigans. Light cashmere cardigans and trench coats are a great to keep handy when it comes to daily temperature swings of 15+ degrees. My personal favorites are the silk/cashmere blend Prada cardigans at hit at the hip. I like to pair them with sleeveless turtlenecks (like those from Akris) when I go to the office. Cropped wool pants are also timely, comfortable, and stylish to wear with ankle boots.
You can also start introducing a little black in your wardrobe outfit by outfit. There really is no set rule about when to start introducing more and more black. I was just in NYC and people were still wearing light colors because the weather was still so nice and warm.
If you’d like to supplement your coat supply, definitely be on the lookout in the early Fall. A pea coat and three-quarter coat are definite must-haves. I usually have at least one wool coat in black, gray and camel. As for sweater coats, I hesitate in investing a lot of money in them because the season is so short for them. I feel the same way about puffy vests and therefore discourage their purchasing with a hefty price tag.
