That ugly sweater….it’s not just for the office Christmas party anymore. Recently, fashion has been undergoing a period of sensationalism as major brands like Gucci and Prada are turning towards creating traditionally ugly pieces to create waves and keep their popularity.
Generally, “ugly clothing” is clothing that is not accepted by the mainstream. Ugly fashion is not necessarily quality-inferior clothing, but rather is clothing that offends traditional senses. However, there are ways to make ugly fashion look glamorous this winter and convert and otherwise boring look into something fashion forward and fun.
Layer “ugly”: My husband absolutely hates my over-sized, mustard, Hermès boyfriend sweater. But worn over a short, fitted pencil skirt and turtle neck with tights, my “ugly” mustard sweater transforms my outfit from tailored minimalist to innovative and unique. So, my advice is to wear one “ugly” item over a very subdued minimalist outfit. Layering with “ugly” may serve various purposes including: providing an extra layer for warmth for those really cold days and taking some sexiest away from an outfit in more conservative office environments.
Wear “ugly” in bold colors: Back to my ugly mustard sweater…Mostly like when wearing designer “ugly,” the fabrics and materials are of high quality. So, don’t be afraid to wear bold colors. These fabrics will look even more luxurious in deep hues. My particular favorites mustards, cobalts, burnt oranges, burgandys, and evergreens. Remember, unexpected pops of color make outfits fun and interesting!
Never wear “ugly” shoes and evening wear: Ugly shoes are more of a brand marketing campaign than a style option and are never a good idea. Similarly, ugly evening wear has no place in your closet other than if you are going to the Met Gala.
