The chunky heel has been cropping up a lot this year and seems to be in full force for the Fall as well. Women in DC can now breathe a sigh of relief when walking through the brick sidewalks of Georgetown and Old Town Alexandria. Unfortunately, though stilettos are beautiful to look at, they generally only have a long life when used on office carpeting. Even if you can walk a mile with them without getting them stuck in the sidewalk cracks, the little heel tip will last just that before having to be re-heeled. Sigh.

In fact, I’ve put a self-inflected moratorium on buying stilettos for the time being so the emergence of a chunkier heel is very welcomed. I’ve also noticed, in the mode of the 1960s, the rounded toe has been getting some more traction. The roomier toe box allowed by the rounded toe has been a godsend after being squeezed into tight little pointy pumps for so long. Some designers, however, have pursued another route. For example, Jimmy Choo has modified the almond toe this year to a shorter pointier toe box, even more excruciating than long pointed toe box so typical in designers like Manolo Blahnik.

Still, there are enough 1960s-like rounded toes and chunky heels to make life easier, yet still fashionable around DC. My personal favorites so far this year are from Valentino (which I purchased in black). With a manageable heel height, these babies can flawless go from office to evening in the Fall and Winter.
